How Existing Content Will Be Affected by Gutenberg WordPress Editor

In all the various articles on Gutenberg this is the first I've seen that specifically looks at what will happen to the content that's already on your site. Bear in mind that it's a few months old and Gutenberg has come a long way since then, but it's still relevant.

we’re only going to focus on how the Gutenberg editor affects the existing content on your website with a standard WordPress installation (not page builders; we’ll cover that another time). Now, let’s dig in.

How to Add HTML5 Video to WordPress Using Custom Fields

HTML5 Content is both extremely engaging and increasingly popular among users. Check out this article to find out how to add it to your WordPress site using custom fields.

Generally speaking, if you ask 10 WordPress developers how to do something, you’ll receive ten different answers. But that speaks to both the versatility of the CMS and that there is more than one solution to any given task. Recently, I faced the challenge of setting up an HTML5 video inside a WordPress page. It’s in a static location and would need to be replaced every so often. While it’s fine to use the Video Shortcode, in this case I wanted to make things extra simple for the folks who would be updating the page. I didn’t want them to have to learn what a Shortcode was or how to use it. So, the simplest solution (in my mind, anyway) was to create some custom fields where the related video files could be uploaded. From there, the theme’s template would automatically create the necessary code to display the video. Here’s how I did it:

Disable Comments Without Deleting Them (WordPress)

For those looking for information on disabling comments on WordPress - check out this article.

I have recently discovered how difficult it is to temporarily remove all comments site wide, without deleting these comments forever. This website receives a massive number of comments; a huge number that are spam, a large number that are real (but do not add to the conversation, or the article as a whole), and a small number that are generally insightful and create conversation. The management of these comments take up a large number of man hours, and I am simply unsure whether my time is justified.

Thinking Beyond the Interface

Love part of the article - "Instead of thinking, "We need to commission art and direct a photo shoot where the photographer accounts for clear space on the right-hand side of the image for the text placement," what frequently happens is: "Let’s put a white box over the image so the text is legible at any breakpoint." - highlights the importance of planning our content!!

Designers have largely shifted their skill sets toward interface design, prototyping, and code. Are writing and art direction getting left behind?

Writing is definitely an important tool to have up your sleeve. How important do you think it is for designers to have strong writing skills?

Every week a new article comes out preaching to designers the necessity of learning to code, sales, or [insert new skill here]. If you don’t learn one of these indispensable skills, your career is bound to crash and burn. Why? Because of the looming AI insurgence or some other wacky theory. The real question should be: What skill provides the biggest gains for the least amount of effort? And the answer is: Writing.

9 Simple Tips for Writing Persuasive Web Content

Often working out what you want your website to say can be a huge challenge, but once you've solved that issue you quickly run into another one which can be just as problematic - how to say it! While far from exhaustive, this article offers a handful of tips to help you write the content for your website in a way that will best serve your visitors, which of course translates into better user engagement and ultimately better conversion rates.

It’s a common mistake. Even experienced web writers make it. When writing your web copy, who do you think of? Do you picture a potential customer reading your text? And do you think about what makes him – or her – click? That’s what most web writers do. They treat their web visitors like human beings who like to read. They treat their web visitors just like readers of printed text. But that’s wrong. Completely wrong. Because web copy is totally different than print copy.
